Engineering Compute Cluster – Gaining Access

Requesting an Account

Faculty members must request access for themselves and for their students. Students cannot request cluster access on their own. Once your account is created, you will receive an email with the details you need to get started.

To request access, submit a support ticket by emailing support@engr.msstate.edu. Please include:

  • Your NetID, and the NetID of each student who needs access
  • The course or research project the cluster will be used for

Connecting to the Cluster

You must be on an MSU network to reach the cluster. If you are off campus or on a non-MSU network, you must connect to the MSU VPN first.

You connect to the cluster with SSH. The cluster’s address is:

engr-cluster-01.engr.msstate.edu

On an MSU network

The cluster is available from any MSU network. Open a terminal and run:

ssh NETID@engr-cluster-01.engr.msstate.edu

Replace NETID with your MSU NetID.

Remote access (off campus or non-MSU networks)

The cluster cannot be reached directly from outside MSU networks. You must first connect to the MSU VPN. Once the VPN is connected, use the same SSH command as above.

SSH clients

  • Windows 10 and 11: use PowerShell or Command Prompt (OpenSSH is built in), or a client such as PuTTY.
  • macOS and Linux: use the Terminal application.

Your Password

You must log in with your engineering password, not your MSU password. If you don’t know your engineering password, you can reset it at https://it.engr.msstate.edu/ssp/.

Next Steps

After you log in, see Engineering Compute Cluster – Running Jobs to submit your first job.
